Buenas!
Mi caso es que tengo un viejo ordenador, que me anda algo lento con el 10.04, y ya no sé si es problema de que el cpu está cascado o es que se le hace grande esta versión. Alguna otra que le pueda ir mejor? Será del cpu? El caso es que a veces se queda "petado" con el indicador de cpu al 100%.

Mira el ordenador de mi novia es justamente el mismo y va perfectamente con ubuntu 12.04 lts, eso si usando el modo clásico sin efectos y usando los drivers libres de nouveau para la targeta gráfica ya que ya no hay soporte por parte de los drivers propietarios, y seguro que aun le puedes aumentar el rendimiento si en lugar de gnome instalas algun entorno ligero como lxde o xfce

Algún proceso tendrás chupando recursos.
Esa CPU -salvo que tenga algo a punto de cascar- se merienda el 10.4.
Yo te escribo desde 10.4 en una cpu P IV a 2,66 con 1,2 Gb de ram con efectos de escritorio activados
y te aseguro que va muy fluído.
Comprueba pocesos. Si no hay nada raro, comprueba ram (por si acaso) y disco duro, que éste si suele tocar las narices con cuelgues y ralentizaciones cuando está agonizando.
