Lee DVD pero no CD.... muy raro

Muy buenas noches.

Después de mucho buscar, no he podido dar con la solución y es por eso que me dirijo al foro para ver si me pueden dar una ayuda. Uso ubuntu hardy heron 8.4 en un pc portable hp pavilion tx1330la. Este notebook tiene una unidad Super Multi DVD±RW 8x con tecnología LightScribe con soporte a doble capa. Resulta que hasta hace un tiempo me leia muy bien CD y DVD montandolos automáticamente cuando los colocaba en la unidad, sin embargo, instalé ayer VMware Workstation y de ahí no fue posible cargar un CD donde está winxp profeional y ningún cd en general (solo dvd) ya que quiero emularlo para correr software específico que no correo en linux.

Yo tengo una unidad Lightscribe de Philips, y, aunque si puedo leer CDs y DVDs, no puedo grabar los primeros. Y no he logrado "pintar" los discos...

Afortunadamente, dispongo de una grabadora LG, que si va bien.

Así que me imagino que es un problema de la lectora, quizás se le pueda actualizar el firmware, yo, ni me molesto, sólo la tengo como unidad lectora auxiliar para copias.
